ABOUT MCRS
MCRS was started by Matthew Whittaker at the age of 16 in 2009. He began working with computers at Parkwood Middle School in 2006 where he started learning basic computer knowledge. At the time, Matthew performed small tasks for the middle school such as installing printers, programs, etc. These skills went more in depth as he got closer to graduating 8th grade in 2007.
After graduation, Matthew was rezoned from attending Parkwood High school to attending a brand new school. In August of 2007, Matthew was asked to assist the Union County Technology department in setting up Marvin Ridge High School’s computers for their opening year. During their setup, Matthew realized that he had a growing interest in technology and wanted to further pursue it. Matthew’s 9th grade year would prove to be his last “normal” year of high school.
At the beginning of his sophomore year at Marvin Ridge, he was asked to attend an allocated class to work on the school’s technology during the day. This not only helped further Matthew’s interest in technology, but also opened up doors for future business. The more work he did for Marvin Ridge, the more contacts he made, which lead him to helping the staff and students with their technology issues outside of the campus. At that moment, it was apparent to Matthew that his talent could be put to use in a business environment. Shortly after beginning to work on other people’s technology outside of school, he began to distribute flyers to local neighborhoods to get the word out. This went on for over a year or so at which point Matthew realized that he needed to create an official company which lead into a sole proprietorship in the name of Matthew’s Computer Repairs and Support.
Matthew’s Computer Repairs and Support was officially opened under a legal entity, January 2011 after over a year of service. Matthew kept his company as sole proprietorship until November of 2013, at which point he renamed the company to a more scalable name and changed the entity to an s-corp. The new company name would come to be known as MCRS. The company name and entity type has stayed the same since November 2013, and has no plans to change anytime soon.
When Matthew was asked the question as to why he started the company he always answers “Well, in 2007 I was attending Parkwood Middle school which was a normal school in all ways. I was perfectly content with attending Parkwood High school in the future. Even though that was the case, I was redistricted to a brand new school named Marvin Ridge. Marvin Ridge was different then Parkwood in more than one way. The most noticeable was the large change in socioeconomics from Parkwood to Marvin Ridge. All of sudden I was placed into an environment where my parents could no longer afford to give me the things that everyone around me was getting. That key concept was the basis of why I started my company. I figured that if my parents couldn’t give it to me, that I should just give it to myself, and so I started down the road to make that happen. Ever since then, I’ve strived to be independent in every way, thanks to my company. That’s the reason I started the company so early on in life.”
Matthew continues to grow his company every day by attending industry conferences and networking events and tries to keep as much business as he can in Waxhaw. As his services continue to grow and change with technology, he looks forward to expanding within the local community and well beyond in years to come.
